Hope & Haven's Amazing Journey
Jenny Schatzle’s pregnancy was going flawlessly until her water broke two months early. Her twin girls were born at 30 weeks and weighed less than three pounds. They were rushed to the Neonatal ICU at Cottage Health where they spent seven weeks under expert care. Today, they are growing strong and thriving.
Our NICU is proud to celebrate its 30 year anniversary.
Avery's Story – Cottage Children's Medical Center
When Avery was one, he had dangerously high fevers. His illness was a mystery, and his parents were desperate for answers. They found them when they met Dr. Miriam Parsa, a specialist at Cottage Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) Grotenhuis Pediatric Clinics.
Avery was diagnosed with a rare disease called Familial Mediterranean Fever. They began traveling from Bakersfield to Cottage for treatment. Now four, Avery is enjoying his life as a healthy kid.
Dreams Made Real – Jared's Story of Resilience
More than 18 years ago, Mary’s preeclampsia led to a distressed pregnancy. Doctors at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital were able to save both her and Jared. He spent three months in the Neonatal ICU. Today they both enjoy full, healthy lives and take pride in each new milestone along the way.
Saving Stella - Treating Pediatric Type I Diabetes
When 2-year-old Stella's parents noticed that their rambunctious child was becoming lethargic, they knew something was wrong. When a pediatrician tested her blood sugar and determined that she was suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, Stella was transferred to Cottage Children's Medical Center. There, she received the care she needed, and the whole family learned how to help Stella manage her Type I Diabetes.
But like many of Cottage Children's Medical Center's patients, Stella's family traveled from outside Santa Barbara to receive care. The Family Assistance Fund helped them make ends meet while they were here supporting their daughter.
Harlem Globetrotters at CCMC
A member of the Original Harlem Globetrotters exhibition team brought more than just basketball skills to pediatric patients at Cottage Children's Medical Center. A big thank you to "El Gato" Melendez for bringing laughter and smiles to our patients at CCMC.
"It got a child out of bed," said Child Life Specialist Jaynie Wood. "He gave us something that you can't get in books and that you can't get in medicine."
Dreams Made Real - Isa Beats Cancer
When Isa was just two years-old, she was diagnosed with leukemia. From her initial hospital stay, to treatments and follow-up appointments, Isa and her family always felt a special bond with the staff at Cottage Children’s Medical Center.
Today, she spends her time playing piano, enjoying soccer with friends, walking her dogs and serving as her class president. CCMC cares for over 14,000 children a year in our Acute Pediatrics Unit, Neonatal and Pediatric ICU’s, the emergency department, pediatric trauma center, and eight specialized outpatient clinics.
Elijah Knight
Like any other day, teenager Elijah Knight's father was driving he and his sister to school. On the way, their vehicle was struck by an SUV. Elijah suffered serious life-threatening injuries as he attempted to shield his baby sister from the impact. His injuries were so severe, he had to be airlifted from Lompoc to the Trauma Center at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for emergency surgery.
Colton Vogel
Pamela Vogel had a difficult pregnancy and went into labor four months before her due date. She gave birth to twins but her baby daughter did not survive. Pamela’s son Colton Vogel did survive but he weighed 1 lb 11 oz. at birth and could not breathe on his own due to his underdeveloped lungs.
Colton was cared for in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Cottage Children’s Hospital, where he was put on a ventilator to help him breathe and to continue his growth under the careful watch of neonatologists and specialized neonatal nurses and staff. After more than 100 days, he was finally strong enough to go home to Santa Barbara with his mom and dad. Today, Colton is a healthy toddler who loves to smile and play.

Dominick Recovers from Accident at CCMC
When a go kart accident left Santa Maria resident Dominick Guzman with serious injuries, first responders decided he needed to be flown to Cottage Children's Medical Center in Santa Barbara.
The care the 10-year-old received at CCMC allowed him to return home less than a week after the crash where he's expected to make a full recovery.
Arthritis and Andilynne
Diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis at age two, five-year-old Andilynne has taken back her childhood with the help of her family and the team at Cottage Children's Medical Center.
