What Does Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Mean at Cottage Health?

Representation

  • We commit to creating a cadre of pediatricians who reflect the identities and experiences of our community and the families we serve
  • We partner with community organizations and schools to increase the accessibility of healthcare as a career option for young people in the area, especially those from minority communities

Belonging

  • We build a culture in which everyone is valued for their unique set of experiences and perspectives
  • We foster close relationships between our residents and our faculty and can tailor an individualized curriculum to residents’ needs and career goals
  • We support the mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing of our trainees through supporting quarterly wellness events, scheduling regular opportunities during protected time for resident feedback on the program (house staff meetings) and ensuring that all our residents have access and time to maintain optimal health.

Justice

  • We train residents, during both clinical rotations as well as our didactic sessions, to recognize bias and discrimination as well as structural and social drivers of health in clinical encounters, medical literature, and institutions
  • We equip residents as advocates for our patients, families and communities through a robust Community Pediatrics rotation as well as opportunities for advocacy woven throughout all rotations
