Mark Bookspan, MD

Dr. Mark Bookspan is Director of Internal Medicine Education. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and has been the Director of the Arthritis Clinic at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department for the past 43 years. Dr. Bookspan has been involved with the teaching program since 1978. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Keck-USC School of Medicine.

After medical school, Dr. Bookspan studied at University of Arizona (medical residency), University of Pennsylvania (adult rheumatology) and Children’s’ Hospital of Philadelphia (pediatric rheumatology).

Dr. Bookspan and his wife, Shelley, enjoy classical music and jazz both of which are in plentiful supply here in Santa Barbara. Activities involving catering to their dogs (who rule the Bookspan household) fill up much additional time. Dr. Bookspan has a standing invitation to present, past and future residents of Cottage Medical Education to participate in a reading group delving into important literature both medical and non-medical.
