Lynn Fitzgibbons, MD, FIDSA
Dr. Lynn Fitzgibbons is the Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and holds academic appointments at USC Keck School of Medicine and UC Santa Barbara. She works as an Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine inpatient teaching attending at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and is the Infectious Disease physician at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, where she was previously Deputy Health Officer.
Through her career, she has had a particular interest in HIV medicine in underserved populations, having spent ten months as a volunteer clinical faculty in Mbarara, Uganda prior to completing her Infectious Disease training. She has been an associated faculty with the Cottage Health residency program since 2015, joined the permanent faculty in 2016, and became program director in 2021.
As an adjunct faculty at UCSB since 2019, she co-teaches an annual undergraduate class, Geography 6: Sex, Drugs and Geography, involving an overview of several STD and drug epidemics from a spatial and geographic lens. Social determinants of health have been a particular focus of her work, extending from HIV clinical work and medical education in sub-Saharan Africa to the clinical care of uninsured and underinsured in the Santa Barbara area. She is also the Medical Director of the Cottage Center for Population Health, served as past chair of the Cottage IRB, and continues to serve on that Board, as well as the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinic system.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, she worked closely with SB County Public Health Department and the leadership at Cottage Health on many aspects of the clinical and public health response, with an emphasis on education, clinical care and policy work. Her areas of research include several social and basic science applications of clinical infectious diseases, including epidemiology, virology and medical education.
