Led by an experienced community of physicians, Cottage GME programs are marked by an environment of collegiality and teamwork. Collaboration among residents and faculty encourages a flexibility designed to meet the individual needs and interests of every resident. At Cottage, residents are treated with respect and encouraged to maintain a balanced life—enabling residents to reach their full potential as physicians.

The General Surgery Residency Program at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (SBCH) is a five-year program, approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, The American Board of Surgery, and the American College of Surgeons through the Residency Review Committee. The program matches four categorical general surgical residents per year.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to recruit the finest possible candidates and train them to deliver compassionate, high quality patient care and achieve their maximum potential personally and professionally. Within a nurturing educational environment, we provide a patient-centered, evidence-based surgical experience in a very high-volume, community hospital. As one of the oldest training programs on the west coast, we continue to pride ourselves on the success of our extraordinary graduates who practice in both the community and University settings.
