As a referring physician, you can call on Cottage Children’s Medical Center for emergency ground transportation of newborns, children or teenagers with serious or life-threatening conditions. Our specialized pediatric and neonatal ambulance service, known as “the critical care bed on wheels,” serves residents in the Tri-Counties on California’s Central Coast.
Emergency Pediatric Transport for the Central Coast
Outfitted with advanced technology to support pediatric emergency care, designated ambulances from Cottage Health bring critically ill or injured newborns and children or adolescents to our facilities, including:
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) – Speak with our charge nurse, who coordinates with the Cottage Health neonatologists to dispatch the NICU ambulance
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) – Speak with the intensivist who will help facilitate best way to transport the patient. The accepting Physician will discuss with referring facility best way to transport the patient to the PICU

From Vandenberg in the north and the San Fernando Valley in the south to Arroyo Grande in the west and Bakersfield in the east, your youngest patients will benefit from intensive medical care on the road. We’ll get them safely to Cottage Children’s Medical Center as quickly as possible, and we’ll help you coordinate with air ambulance services as needed.

Depending on the age of the child being referred, Cottage Health dispatches a team of the appropriate medical professionals in an ambulance with specialized equipment from our dedicated fleet.
- The pediatric intensive care (PICU) ambulance transports children from one day old to 17 years of age to Cottage Health.
- The neonatal intensive care (NICU) ambulance transports critically ill newborns from area hospitals to Cottage Health.
