Overview - Pharmacy Residency Program - PGY1
Program Structure
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s residency is a 12 month (52 week) long program. Residency orientation occurs during the month of July for PGY1 residents.
Rotations
All PGY1 residents must complete the following required rotations:
- Orientation
- Critical Care
- Infectious Disease/Antimicrobial Stewardship
- Internal Medicine I and II
- Pharmacy Leadership
- Research
All PGY1 residents may select the following elective rotations:
- Any required rotation may be repeated
- Ambulatory Care
- Emergency Department
- Oncology
- Medical ICU
- Medication Use Policy and Safety
- Pediatrics
- Psychiatry
- Surgical ICU
Examination & Licensure
Residents are required to have or obtain licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of California. Incoming residents are expected to sit for the NAPLEX (if not licensed in another state) and CPJE as soon as possible after obtaining the authorization to test.
Residency Certificate Information
The following are requirements for certificate of completion from the PGY1 residency program:
- All required and elective learning experiences
- Research project manuscript
- Western States Residency Conference presentation
- Participation in medical emergencies (i.e. code stroke, code blue)
- Completion of teaching and learning certificate
- Medication use evaluation/quality improvement project
- Drug therapy monograph, drug class review, or treatment guideline/protocol
- All pharmacy service commitment weekends
- All required presentations (1 ACPE Grand Rounds and 2 patient case presentations)
- All evaluations
- Attendance at all required meetings (therapeutics conference, CSHP Seminar, Midyear, Western States Residency Conference)
- A completed residency notebook
- Achievement of >50% of residency goals
- Participation in recruitment activities
Advising
The PGY1 resident will have a residency advisor who will serve as a mentor throughout the residency year.
