Pharmacy Residency Program - PGY1 - Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
Welcome to the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program. Our residency program is committed to providing an educational program that meets the accreditation standards and underlying principles of American Society of Health-System Pharmacist (ASHP) for PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program.
The PGY1 residency program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives. Residents who successfully complete the PGY1 residency program will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Our Vision
The Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Residency Vision is to be the premier training site for future pharmacy leaders who provide evidence-based pharmacotherapy and patient centered care.

Program Goals
The goal of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program of SBCH is to enable its residents to meet the educational competencies set forth by ASHP. Cottage’s program utilizes the collective assets of the Cottage Hospitals (SBCH, GVCH, SYVCH) in a synergistic manner to allow residents the opportunities to meet the required educational goals that are also set forth by ASHP as a means to reaching the educational outcomes.
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program is composed of four competency areas:
- Patient care
- Advancing practice and improving patient care
- Leadership and management
- Teaching, education, and dissemination of knowledge.
A variety of elective rotations (ambulatory care, emergency department, surgical ICU, medical ICU, medication use policy and safety, oncology, pediatrics, and psychiatry) are available which allow the residents to purse individual goals as well as complete core rotations (orientation, critical care, internal medicine I and II, infectious disease, pharmacy administration, and research).
