Cottage Health has developed a comprehensive epilepsy program with state-of-the-art monitoring equipment and a full care team where each patient will receive personalized, hands-on care during their diagnosis and treatment.

Epilepsy is a condition characterized by recurrent seizure activity that affects over two million adults in the United States, or about 1% of the adult population and 470,000 adolescents and youth.

Treatments for epilepsy involve medication and surgical options in addition to an appropriate diagnosis by expert clinicians.

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

The inpatient Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) provides specialized evaluation and treatment for patients with uncontrolled seizures. Patients are referred to the inpatient EMU by their physician for treatment of their symptoms or seizures to:

• Determine if they have epileptic seizures
• Determine the type of seizures they may have
• Explore treatment options
• Make medication changes in a safe environment

Patients referred by their neurologist or primary care providers may be treated in an outpatient setting or admitted to the hospital for more targeted evaluations to determine if surgical candidacy is appropriate.

Specialized Treatment Team

A best practice for providing comprehensive treatment is an epilepsy center managed by an epileptologist, a specialist who is formally trained in an epilepsy fellowship program.

Your care team also includes an experienced nurse practitioner and neuroscience nurses who specialize in the care of epilepsy patients.
