Cottage Health, Hazelden Betty Ford to Collaborate on Addiction Treatment

Cottage Health is the newest member of the Hazelden Betty Ford Patient Care Network, a growing group of health care providers working together to address the public health problem of addiction.

Minnesota-headquartered Hazelden Betty Ford, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2019, launched the Patient Care Network just 20 months ago. The first of its kind in the addiction treatment industry, the network now has 13 members—all vetted to ensure they share a commitment to effective, evidence-based practices; working together; and improving patient outcomes. The network facilitates shared learnings and collaboration among members while also extending the continuum of care for each organization and providing access to evidence-based clinical tools, educational resources and best practices.

“The Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine team at Cottage Health has been providing comprehensive addiction treatment for more than four decades. We look forward to collaborating with Hazelden Betty Ford to address the growing needs of our community,” said Ron Werft, Cottage Health president and CEO.

“The power of strategic collaboration to improve patient access and outcomes offers great hope for our field and for the millions of individuals, families and communities affected by addiction to alcohol, opioids and other drugs,” added Bob Poznanovich, vice president of business development for the nonprofit Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, a national addiction treatment leader with 17 sites across the country, including three in California. “We are excited to welcome Cottage Health as a member of our Patient Care Network and look forward to changing lives in The Golden State together.”

“One of the many valuable things that Cottage Health brings to our national network is experience operating an innovative Bridge Clinic with Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, which provides walk-in urgent care and treatment consultation services for people with addiction problems,” said Poznanovich. “The Bridge Clinic makes it easier for people to access addiction treatment quickly—a crucial priority for everyone amid the tragic opioid crisis that continues to claim tens of thousands of American lives every year.”

Cottage Health has three acute-care hospitals and more than 700 physicians who serve approximately 100,000 patients annually. Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital provides inpatient detoxification services; longer-term, 24-hour residential treatment is offered at Cottage Residential Center; and intensive outpatient treatment is available at Cottage Health’s COPE programs in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.

“Our goal is to use our evidence-based approaches to helping people overcome addiction, which aligns nicely with Hazelden Betty Ford’s quality programs, services and research, so we’re thrilled to join the network and collaborate more closely with other leading-edge providers,” said Dr. Paul Erickson, medical director for psychiatry and addiction medicine at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

More information on the exciting new relationship will be available at Cottage Health’s Mental Health Fair in Santa Barbara on Saturday, May 4.
